England beat New Zealand by five wickets in the first Test match of the English summer. It was Joe Root who played an absolute gem of a knock. As a matter of fact, he scored a brilliant century in the fourth innings to win the match for the home team. This century took his tally to over 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He became just the second Englishman to do so.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has warned Sachin Tendulkar, and felt that Root might break the legendary batter's record for most Test runs. The "Masterblaster" has scored 15,921 runs in the longest format of the game. On the other hand, Root has 10,015 runs to his name. Vaughan believed Root was one of the greatest English players.

"Joe Root is England’s best ever – now Sachin Tendulkar should watch out. For me, Joe Root stands alongside Graham Gooch as England’s greatest batsman and the way he is going he could surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs," Vaughan wrote on the Telegraph.

Vaughan also pointed out that he is still 6000 runs short of the milestone but has a few years to play the game at the top level. "He (Root) is still 6000 short of Sachin’s total but he is only 31 and if James Anderson can play until he is 40 then I think Joe can too. Root loves batting that much. He is driven. He is a cricket badger. You have to have it in you to wake up every morning and think about batting," he concluded.

Meanwhile, former Australian great Mark Taylor had suggested that Joe Root may break Sachin Tendulkar's record as Root is just 31, and has age on his side. "Root has a minimum of five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable," Taylor had told Sky Sports.

"Root is batting as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there are 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy," he added.
