When it comes to leading a cricket team, several captains have changed the face of the Indian cricket team with their perspective. From MK Pataudi, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, to Virat Kohli, all these stars have led the Indian cricket team to new heights. Talking about the trophies or ICC events, MS Dhoni continues to lead, whereas the current Indian skipper Virat Kohli is making his own niche as well. There have always been debates regarding who is the better Indian captain between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. When Michael Vaughan, a former English cricketer, was asked to name his choice between the two, he gave an interesting response.
The Englishman stated that MS Dhoni is the trailblazer, particularly in the white-ball and T20 game. Vaughan feels that he is the best ever T20 captain by a good distance. He also added that what Dhoni has brought to the Indian team was fantastic. However, Michael Vaughan feels that Virat Kohli is still a superior leader in leading the team in Tests, though he still favored MS Dhoni as an overall choice.
Virat Kohli has proven to be India's best Test captain of all time
Under MS Dhoni, India has won all three major ICC titles. This includes the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Under his captaincy, the Indian cricket team reached the top of the ICC Test rankings for the first time. On the other hand, Virat Kohli has proven to be India's best Test captain of all time. He led team India to 36 wins from 60 matches. Also, it was under Virat Kohli that India defeated Australia at their home for the first time in 70 years.
Virat Kohli took charge of the Test team with them ranked outside the top 5 teams back in early 2015. However, the 32-year-old has successfully transformed the team. Under him, the Men in Blue ended as the top-ranked side for the fifth successive year in ICC's recent annual update. However, Virat Kohli is yet to win anything significant in limited-overs. He has already led the team to the final in the 2017 Champions Trophy and semi-final of the 2019 50-over World Cup. As captain, Virat can win his maiden ICC trophy if India wins the WTC final against New Zealand next month.
