Mickey Arthur, the Sri Lankan head coach, has urged ICC for the implementation of injury-related substitution. ICC already has the rule of appointing a substitution for concussion-related injuries. Mickey Arthur has commented based on the injury sustained by Sri Lankan players in their ongoing test match in Centurion against South Africa. South Africa has announced that it will open up the topic for debate after the Test.
Due to various injuries, Sri Lanka has already lost the services of their three bowlers; Kasun Rajitha, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Lahiru Kumara. In addition to them, Dhananjaya de Silva's participation is in doubt for the series as well. He retired hurt during batting after enduring a torn thigh.
Mickey Arthur plans to discuss his suggestion
Mickey Arthur has revealed that as he is a member of the ICC Cricket Committee; he will have discussions after the Test series. Former Pakistan coach has also referred to India losing Umesh Yadav in their second Test against Australia. He has mentioned that too much workload, lack of practice along with the COVID-19 restriction is leading the players to have muscle injuries continuously. And due to the muscle injuries, the teams are losing their fast bowlers frequently.
Mickey Arthur has mentioned that if conditions around the world were normal, they could have had the ordinary conditioning procedure. But, with the present abnormal situation, he is quite sure that this issue would be up for consideration by the ICC. Arthur is afraid that Sri Lanka would have only six or seven players to finish the test unless the injured players come back to play. It would be bad for his side, the cricket fans, and the opponent team.
The Lankans is touring in South Africa for the two-Test series with a 21-man squad. Following the end of the Test series, they will head back home for two Tests against England beginning from Jan 14.
