Mirabai Chanu lived up to the expectations and won India's first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Chanu, who won the women's 49kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 201 kg, was India's third weightlifting medalist of the day following Sanket Sargar (silver) and Gururaja (bronze) earlier in the day.
The 27-year-old, who also won gold at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast in Australia, was miles ahead of the competition as she lifted 88 kg in the snatch and 113 kg in the clean and jerk events. Mirabai just needed to finish her first try in the clean and jerk round, which she expertly accomplished by lifting 105 kg, thanks to her superb performance in the snatch round, which saw her break the previous Commonwealth record.
She lifted 113 kg on her second try after knowing she had won gold. Her third attempt at lifting 119 kg failed, but it didn't matter because she had already won her second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Mirabai easily won the competition, outplaying Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritius (76 kg + 96 kg), who took second place, by 29 kg. Hannah Kaminsky of Canada won the bronze medal after lifting a total of 171 kg (74 kg + 97 kg).
Mirabai is one of India's most accomplished weightlifters. Before capturing the gold medal once more in 2022, she already had the silver (2014) and gold (2018) Commonwealth Games medals in her possession. She also took home the gold in the 2017 World Championships, along with other medals from the Commonwealth Championships and an Asian Championships.
The pinnacle of her professional life occurred in Tokyo last year when, surpassing Karnam Malleswari's bronze medal from Sydney 2000, she became India's first weightlifter to win a silver medal at an Olympics.
Meanwhile, Twitter went crazy with her brilliance to win the gold. Wishes started pouring from all across the globe as she was felicitated. "The exceptional @mirabai_chanu makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes," the Indian Prime Minister tweeted.
