Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are on the cusp of achieving a major milestone ahead of India’s first Test against South Africa in Centurion, starting on December 26. The duo, who was rested from the two-match Test series against New Zealand, is now back with the Indian team. Bumrah returns to South Africa for the first time, after having made his Test debut in the country in 2018. He had a memorable outing in the third Test at Wanderers and bagged his maiden five-wicket haul.

Bumrah has not looked back since that epic performance and has gone on to become a genuine match-winner for India. He has played 24 Tests, picking up 101 wickets. However, only two of those Test matches have been played in India. The rest have all been played in overseas conditions. In the 22 matches, he has taken 97 wickets. He now needs three wickets to complete his 100 wickets away from home.

Meanwhile, Shami is just five wickets away from taking 200 wickets in Test cricket. If he gets to the milestone in Centurion, the pacer will become the fifth Indian after Kapil Dev, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, and Javagal Srinath to do so. Both Shami and Bumrah have played a major role in India doing well in the SENA countries. They have managed to take wickets with the new and old ball and have allowed skipper Virat Kohli to dictate terms. The duo will again have to play a crucial role against South Africa in the three-Test matches.

India have not won a Test series in South Africa. The team managed to come close in 2006 and 2013 but failed to get over the line. India though have managed to do well in the overseas conditions in the last three years and that should give them the confidence of doing well against South Africa as well.
