London Spirit defeated Welsh Fire by a margin of 16 runs in the 24th match of the Hundred 2022. A complete all-rounded performance by the home team at the Lord's allowed them to take two points on the board. With the win, London moved to the top of the points table. On the other hand, Welsh Fire is still looking for their first win of the season after playing six games.
Batting first, the Spirits had a decent start and could add a few small partnerships. Adam Rossington (32) and Daniel Bell-Drummond (12) added a 41-run partnership for the first wicket, but the Fire came back strong with a few wickets, with Ish Sodhi at the helm. The home team was reduced 57/3 after 42 balls.
After that, Dan Lawrence played a great knock that got the team back in the swing. He scored 43 runs off 26 balls and formed crucial partnerships with Ben McDermott (32) and Kieron Pollard (25). These performances allowed London Spirit set a moderate total of 156/6 runs in the first innings.
Welsh Fire got off to the worst possible start in the chase, losing a few early wickets. Lawrence was on top of his game as he quickly dismissed the top order. The visitors were reduced to 37/4 in 44 balls. Some small performances by Ben Duckett (24), Dwaine Pretorius (23), Leus du Plooy (30), and Matthew Critchley (21) kept their hopes alive.
However, they were not enough for them to secure a win. Chris Wood and Lawrence combined to get rid of all the set batters to get hold of the match. Welsh Fire was eventually reduced to 139/9 in their allotted 100 balls. Chris Wood and Dan Lawrence each took four wickets for the bowling team, while Jordan Thompson took one.
After the win, London Spirit has five wins and 10 points under their belt. They have almost assured themselves a spot in the top three this season. On the other hand, Welsh Fire have faced their sixth straight defeat of the season. They currently stand at the bottom of the table.
