It’s not a good time to be a Sri Lankan supporter as the roller-coaster of an emotional ride does not seem to end anytime soon. Although the team gave enough reasons to fans to celebrate after winning the T20I series against India, it also gave its followers a reason to worry about when fast bowler Isuru Udana announced retirement from cricket. With a good amount of three to four years of cricket still left in him, this news has certainly not come at an appropriate time.
The contract issue which is going on for a long time seems to be the prime reason for pacer Udana’s sudden retirement from the game. Already the team is deflated without the services of Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, and Danushka Gunathilika, who have been banned from playing cricket for one year after being found guilty of breaching the bio-bubble norms in Durham.
After the India series, the team is set to play a limited-overs series against South Africa starting in September. But if report in Islandcricket.IK is to be believed, then more players are likely to retire before that series.
Strong speculations are doing rounds that one of the Lankan fast bowlers is likely to announce retirement. Also, rumours of one among the three suspended players migrating to play for the USA in near future is circulating. With an upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 coming up in three months, these are certainly not good signs for the Lankan cricket team.
