Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had a dreadful start to the 14th season of the Indian Premier League. The Yellow Brigade suffered a significant defeat against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2021 opening game on Saturday (April 11). Apart from the loss, MS Dhoni suffered a considerable blow. He was fined INR 12 lakh for Code of Conduct Breach after his team maintained a slow over-rate during the game.
Notably, it was CSK's first offence of the edition, and thus the former India skipper was let go with just a fine. If this continues for a couple of more games, then he can get suspended for a match or two. As per new stringent IPL rules, each IPL team has to finish an inning in 90 minutes. This also includes two strategic time-outs of two and a half minutes each. As per the protocol, the over rate has to be 14.1 overs per hour.
However, the fine for the offence remains unchanged. Thus, a second offence will see CSK captain Dhoni receiving a 24 lakh fine, while the remaining team members will be fined INR 6 lakh or 25% match fee fine (whichever is lesser) each. A third offence is going to result in an INR 30 lakh fine, a one-match ban for the skipper and an INR 12 lakh or 50% match fee fine (whichever is lesser) for each player of the team, excluding the captain.
Delhi Capitals handed CSK their 3rd consecutive defeat
Talking about the Saturday encounter, MS Dhoni was dismissed for a duck. However, his team still managed to post a challenging 188 runs on the board. On the other end, Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan showed a superb show. They stitched a 138-run opening partnership in just 13.3 overs. The opening pair helped DC chase down the target in just 18.4 overs with seven wickets in hand.
Delhi Capitals (DC) continued to minimise Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) lead over them and handed CSK their 3rd consecutive defeat. Senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan top-scored for his team with 85 runs off 54 deliveries. He combined with Prithvi Shaw, who slammed 38-ball 72. Delhi Capitals have climbed to the top spot with this win. After losing their opening match, CSK will be hoping to bounce back more robust when they take on Punjab Kings on Friday (April 16).
