In the 22nd game of the ongoing IPL 2023, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders locked horns in Mumbai. Ahead of the game, KKR was looking to make some improvement in their shallow record of 9-22 against their opposition. Also, they were looking to get back to the winning ways after losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad at home only on Friday, April 14.
On the other hand, the home team, MI was looking to continue with their winning momentum. Meanwhile, in the game, the home team won the toss and elected to bowl first. They cited the wicket getting better in the evening. With the bat, the visitors amassed 185/6 at the end of their innings. They reached the total thanks to Venkatesh Iyer's maiden hundred in his IPL career.
Apart from him, the next highest scorer was Andre Russell (21*). No other batter could apply themselves well which is why they couldn't reach above the 200-run mark. For the five-time winners, Hrithik Shokeen took two wickets while Cameron Green, Duan Jansen, Piyush Chawla, and Riley Meredith took one each.
Kolkata Knight Riders had no answer to Mumbai Indians' onslaught
In reply, the Blue Brigade had a great start with Isha Kishan taking apart the KKR bowling. He smashed 58 off 25 balls including five fours and as many sixes. On the other hand, regular skipper Rohit Sharma (20) played as an impact sub as he had a stomach bug. This is the reason Suryakumar Yadav led the team. Meanwhile, after the wicket of Kishan, the likes of Tilak Varma and the stand-in skipper continued the tempo of the run chase.
The latter has had a rough patch in the recent past but that didn't deter him against his ex-team. He smacked 43 off 25 balls including four fours and three sixes. On the other hand, Varma played well for his 30. Even when they got out, they ensured the team's victory. In the end, they won the game by five wickets and 2.2 overs left in the game.
