The Australian Test players are likely to return to the Big Bash League teams after the Border Gavaskar series. All the respective franchises are going to start welcoming back the players as soon as Thursday night.
Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon is set to skip the league for the remainder of the season. Lyon will not be a part of the tournament, in order to spend time with his family after what has been a long summer. The 33-year-old was predicted to play a crucial role in the Test series against India. However, Nathan Lyon failed to impress as he just picked up nine wickets in four matches.
Cameron Green has also confirmed his unavailability for the Big Bash League season. He will return to Western Australia to rest. Mitchell Starc will head to Sydney for scans on his right hamstring. The Sydney Sixers are expecting Starc to be available for their BBL Finals campaign. This will be his first BBL match since 2015, but his availability for the tournament will depend on both the scans' results and any restrictions on travel out of Sydney.
Which Australian Test players are likely to be a part of BBL?
The majority of the Australian test squad will return to their respective BBL teams after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Travis Head and Michael Neser will play for the Adelaide Strikers whereas Mitchell Swepson and Marnus Labuschagne will be a part of the Brisbane Heat franchise.
Moises Henriques and Sean Abbott will be playing for the table-toppers Sydney Sixers. Marcus Harris will return to the Melbourne Renegades and Matthew Wade will play for the Hobart Hurricanes.
Regarding the wicket-keeper batsman Tim Paine, it will be exciting to see if he is picked for his first match for the Hurricanes team. The 36-year-old has not played a T20 game in three years. Pacer James Pattinson and opening batsman Will Pucovski will not play any game as both are injured. Other players like Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, David Warner and Steve Smith won't feature as they don’t have BBL contracts.
Cricket Australia has also confirmed that the match between Perth and Brisbane on January 26 will be played in Adelaide. Earlier, the board decided that both the teams will play the game in Sydney for COVID-19 reasons. The women's 50-over tournament's commencement has also been postponed to January 30 due to border closures.
