Nathan Lyon wants ‘best wicketkeeper’ Tim Paine in the team for Ashes

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon has backed Tim Paine to be included in the team for the first Ashes Test which is set to begin on December 8 at Gabba. Earlier, the wicketkeeper-batter had shockingly quit captaincy following a sexting scandal after which doubts were raised on his participation in the series. Paine, who was promoted to captaincy after the sandpaper saga in 2018, has been an exceptional leader of the Test team.

Paine’s wicketkeeping has also been phenomenal as he hardly put down any catches. Be it against pace or spin, the 36-year-old has been equally potent and formed a good partnership with the bowlers. Lyon said Paine should be in the playing XI since he is the best keeper in the world.

“The selectors said they were going to pick the best available XI. In my eyes, Tim Paine is the best keeper in the world,” Lyon said.

“This is very selfish: From a bowler’s point of view, I want the best gloveman behind the stumps.

“Every bowler’s relationship with the keeper is exceptional.”

Lyon further opined that the remaining bowlers are also backing Paine to be wicketkeeping in the match. The former Australia captain had earlier said he is available for selection during the Ashes series against England.

“I’m pretty sure I’m speaking on behalf of every bowler that we want the best keeper.

“He’s got my full support and I 100 per cent guarantee he’s got the full support of the Australian change room,” the 34-year-old added.

The first Ashes Test is due to begin on December 8 at Gabba in Brisbane. Cricket Australia (CA) are yet to announce the captain of the Test team. With regards to wicketkeeping, Alex Carey and Josh Inglis are other candidates who can replace Paine, if he is not selected in the playing XI.
