The National Games have returned after a six-year long break. The 36th edition of the sporting extravaganza, which is already underway in Gujarat, will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a glittering opening ceremony today at the Mahatma Mandir Complex in Gandhinagar.
Mirabai Chanu, the Olympic weightlifting silver medalist, will be one of the main attractions at the Games, which will be held in six cities: Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. In the previous edition of the National Games, held in 2015 in Kerala, Services (91 gold, 33 silver, and 35 bronze medals) finished first with 159 medals, followed by hosts Kerala and Haryana.
This time, approximately 8,000 athletes will compete in 36 sporting disciplines. The cycling (track) event will be taking place in New Delhi. This year, Mallakhamba and Yogasana have been added to promote the country's sporting heritage.
