New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is likely to miss the forthcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. The 30-year-old has a small tear in his left elbow tendon. New Zealand Cricket medical manager Dayle Shackel has reckoned that Kane Williamson's injury needs a period of rest and rehabilitation. In all the five matches against Australia, Kane Williamson only managed to score 82 runs.
Gary Stead, the Black Caps head coach, stated that he wants Williamson fit for future assignments. This includes the ICC World Test Championship final against India. Stead also revealed how difficult the decision was for the captain to take a step back. However, keeping in mind the busy year ahead, it was necessary to take this step. New Zealand will now hope for a quick recovery as they have to travel to England for a two-Test series in June. The Kiwis will then play the World Test Championship final against India from June 18. The Black Caps cannot afford to head into either of the two crucial series without their best batsman and captain.
Sunrisers Hyderabad worried over Kane Williamson participation in IPL 2021
Apart from the three One Day Internationals in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington, New Zealand is also going to play three T20Is against Bangladesh. New Zealand cricketers will also participate in Indian Premier League 2021, which is scheduled to start on April 9. It remains to be seen if Kane Williamson will participate for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Williamson's absence against Bangladesh gives an opportunity for Devon Conway to make his ODI debut. The 29-year-old had a prolific start to his T20I career as he currently averages 52.28 after nine innings. Tom Latham is also likely to take over the captaincy from Kane Williamson in the shortest format of the game. New Zealand has only played four T20 series since the 2019 World Cup final. New Zealand cricket board will announce their squad on Thursday, with the series starting on March 20 in Dunedin.
