Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, and other New Zealand players might miss the IPL 2021 phase-2 if it takes place in September. During that time, New Zealand is scheduled to play against Pakistan. Recently ECB had also announced that none of the English players would be a part of the IPL because of the tight schedule. Ashley Giles, director of ECB, has mentioned that IPL contracted England players will not be a part of the remaining tournament wherever it takes place. The English board has put its foot down because of the upcoming series against Pakistan and Bangladesh in October and November.
Conducting the remaining games of the IPL is going to be one of the biggest concerns for the BCCI. The Indian cricket board will need a clear window to schedule the 31 fixtures. The Indian players will be available whenever the tournament is staged again. However, the availability of foreign players will be doubtful due to their respective national commitments. The April-May window is the only time of the year when most cricket boards do not conduct any fixtures. During this time they allow their players to take part in IPL.
New Zealand will skip IPL if it is conducted in September
According to sources, the BCCI is thinking of a possible window for IPL 2021 in September. During the same time, the Black Caps are scheduled to play against Pakistan in a bilateral series in UAE. The majority of the IPL-bound players were not selected in the squad for the series against Bangladesh. Now, the players will not be allowed to skip the Pakistan series due to a T20 World Cup that is scheduled to be played this year. The Kiwi players can play the IPL if it takes place after the T20 World Cup. If the IPL occurs in September, then the Black Caps might be forced to skip IPL 2021. Considering the isolation protocols, the BCCI will take at least take a month to complete the tournament.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is one of the major attractions in IPL. He was reappointed as the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad a few days before the tournament was postponed. Lockie Ferguson, Finn Allen, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Adam Mile, Jimmy Neesham, and Kyle Jamieson are other New Zealand in IPL. Tim Siefert, who had joined Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020, is still in India as he tested positive for COVID-19. The wicketkeeper-batsman can head back home only after serving the isolation period and recovering from the infection.
