Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal

Devdutt Padikkal and Prithvi Shaw have been in great form in the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy, and it also seemed that their excellent form could get reinforced soon. However, this is not the case now as a BCCI source has acknowledged that the two youngsters would have to wait for their opportunity. This means that they will not be picked for the forthcoming ODI series against England. The source also confirmed that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be available for the limited-overs leg.

Shaw was with the Indian Test squad on their tour to Australia but was waived after the first Test as he failed to perform. The Mumbai batsman returned home and played for his state team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He led Mumbai in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who left the competition to join the Indian T20I squad.

Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal have performed exceptionally well

In the seven innings which Shaw has played in the tournament, he has scored 754 runs at an average of 188.50. He also scored 185 not out and 165 in the quarter-final and semi-final, respectively. During the course of the tournament, his strike rate has been 134.88. The youngster also notched up four tons, including the highest score of 227 not out.

Talking about Devdutt Padikkal, he has been in form ever since the limelight has fallen on him. The Karnataka batsman has had a fantastic Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has accumulated 737 runs in seven games, with an incredible average of 147.40 and a strike rate of 95.96. Padikkal scored four successive centuries at one point during the tournament. He also scored 50+ scores in the rest of the three innings that he played.

However, all these great performances have not assured the two young men a spot in the Indian cricket team. According to BCCI, none of the senior cricketers has opted for rest from the 3-match ODI series against England. The official also disclosed that as the Indian team is preparing for the T20 World Cup at home this year, there won’t be too many surprises on team's selection.
