Former Australia captain Steve Smith finally got his 28th Test century against Sri Lanka in the first innings of the second Test match. He last scored a century on January 21, 2021. It took him 16 innings and nearly a year and a half to get his next century.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. Marnus Labuschagne came in at three after David Warner was dismissed early. Usman Khawaja was also quickly dismissed, and it was Smith's time to bat at four. Smith, who had struggled in his previous outings, came back stronger and added another century to his tally after 16 innings. At the end of Day one, he was undefeated on 109 off 212 deliveries with 14 boundaries. This was his second Test century against Sri Lanka.

He added to his score on day two. The 33-year-old stayed not out through Australia's first innings. He scored 145 runs in 272 balls, with 16 boundaries to his name. After representing Australia in 87 Test matches, Smith has an average of 60.45 with the bat. In the longest format of the game, he has scored 15087 runs for the Kangaroos.

In reply, Sri Lanka scored 65 runs and lost one wicket until the tea break on day two. Cameron Green took the breakthrough wicket of Pathum Nissanka in the 9th over of the game.
