The home team completely dominated the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, giving them a 1-0 series lead. Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin all performed admirably to give India a victory by a margin of an innings and 132 runs.

Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first at Vidarbha Stadium in Nagpur. However, this decision did not work well for them as Jadeja was at the top of his game. In the first innings, the all-rounder took five wickets to keep Australia to a score of 177. Ashwin, with his three-wicket spell, gave him the perfect support. It was expected that the spinners would get a big turn in the match, given the nature of the pitch in Nagpur.

Then it was all Rohit Sharma (120 runs in 212 balls) who scored a brilliant century. Because of his counter-attacking strategy, he completed his fifty on the first day itself. He did slow down a little the next day, but it was nothing to worry about for India.

While others struggled, Ravindra Jadeja (70 runs in 185 balls) and Axar Patel (84 runs in 74 balls) both contributed half-centuries to help the captain. India scored 400 runs in the first innings and took a 223-run lead.

After that, in what turned out to be the last innings of the match, Australia was absolutely trashed by Ravichandran Ashwin, who completed his 31st five-wicket haul in Test cricket to match the best figures by an Indian. He equalled the record of Anil Kumble.

The star all-rounder put Australian batters under pressure from the start. He dismissed Usman Khawaja in the second over of the innings. He then dismissed David Warner, Matt Renshaw, and Peter Handscomb. Finally, he struck Alex Carey for his 31st five-wicket haul.

While Jadeja supported him well with two wickets in the innings, Mohammed Shami put the final nail in the coffin. He bowled Nathan Lyon and trapped Scot Bolland LBW to win the game for India. Australia's score of 91 in the final innings is their lowest ever against India.
