Australia overcome Sri Lanka by 5 wickets to register their first win of the ODI World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka has lost three matches in a row and will be desperate to get a win under their belt in the tournament. Australia will face Pakistan in next match.

Australia win their first match of the ODI World Cup 2023. Against Sri Lanka, the former world champions claimed a comprehensive win in the end. A win in the tournament would give a lot of confidence to Australia. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has lost the third match on a trot in the ongoing tournament. Sri Lanka has fought hard, but could not claim a win till now. 

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision of Sri Lanka seemed right, as the openers gave a good start to Sri Lanka. A t one stage, Sri Lanka was 125/0. The duo of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera scored fifty for themselves. What followed it was a shocker for Sri Lanka. From 125/0 at one stage, Sri Lanka ended up getting dismissed for 209 runs.

Sri Lanka lost their last 10 wickets for just 84 runs. The wicket of Nissanka started the collapse for Sri Lanka. Every batter who came after him struggled to face the Australian bowlers. Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers, who claimed 4 wickets. The pace duo of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc claimed a couple of wickets each. Sri Lanka ended up with a below par total to defend. 

Clinical chase from Australia, despite the nervy moments 

Chasing the target, Australia found themselves in some trouble. Australia lost David Warner and Steve Smith in the same over. Dilshan Madushanka dismissed both the batters in the same over. From there, Australia recovered well, thanks to some useful partnerships between Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne. Marsh had a good partnership with Josh Inglis as well. 

Marsh scored 52 runs in 51 balls. Labuschagne scored 40 runs in 60 balls. inglis scored 58 runs in 59 balls. Towards the end, the finishing duo of Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell played some useful cameos and took Australia home. Despite the hiccups, Australia won the match. Adam Zampa got the player of the match award for his brilliant spell with the ball.
