Sri Lanka has not been up to the mark in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Following their bad performance in the ongoing tournament, the entire Sri Lankan board was sacked. The news comes after Sri Lanka faced a humiliating loss against India in their match in Mumbai's Wankhede stadium. The match saw Sri Lanka's biggest margin of defeat in the history of the ODI World Cup.
Sri Lanka has had a poor tournament as a team till now. In the first match of the tournament, Sri Lankan bowlers conceded the highest total in the history of the ODI World Cup. South African batters smashed 428 runs in Delhi against Sri Lankans and set the stage on fire. It gave a bad name to the Sri Lankan bowling attack, which was to get worse with every passing match.
In the second match of the tournament, Sri Lankan bowlers conceded 345 runs with the ball while defending the target against Pakistan. It led to the biggest run chase in the history of the World Cup. Sri Lanka then lost their match to Australia despite being in a good position to win the match. They did beat the Netherlands in Lucknow to salvage something for themselves.
Huge defeat against India was the main reason for the move
In their fifth match of the tournament, they beat England and seemed like a team that could post a comeback. What followed it was a poor show. Sri Lanka lost to Afghanistan for the first time in the history of the ODI World Cup. But the biggest nail in the coffin was their huge loss to India. Bowling first, Sri Lanka conceded 357 runs in Mumbai.
With the bat, Sri Lanka had a shambolic performance, as they were dismissed for just 55 runs by the Indian bowlers. It led to a massive 302-run defeat for the former World Champions. In their latest match, Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh by 3 wickets in a thrilling contest. After the match, the entire Sri Lankan cricket board was fired, which has not been surprising.
