The Netherlands created the second upset of the ODI World Cup 2023. With the odds against them, the Netherlands played a highly impressive game to defeat a strong team like South Africa in the tournament. In the process, the Netherlands registered their first win of the tournament and defeated South Africa for the first time in the history of the ODI World Cup.
In a rain-affected game, the match was reduced to 43 overs per side. Batting first, the Dutch found themselves in trouble. The new ball trio of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen made the best use of the conditions and gave a good start to South Africa. The pace trio had the Netherlands at 50/4 at one stage. Even in the middle overs phase, South Africa controlled the game.
Gerland Coetzee was phenomenal in the middle overs and claimed crucial wickets. From 50/4 at one stage, the Netherlands further slipped to 140/7. But in the death overs, Netherlands changed the game completely. The captain of the Netherlands, Scott Edwards scored 78*(69). With some help from the other end from Roaelof Van Der Merwe and Aryan Dutt, the Netherlands scored 245 runs in their 43 overs.
Clinical bowling performance from the Netherlands
Considering the nature of the wicket, it was a good total. Edwards was brilliant with the captaincy. The Dutch captain introduced a spin attack in the powerplay overs and troubled the South African batters. The economic spell from Aryan Meant that South Africa had to go behind others. It led to the collapse of the South African lineup. Quinton De Kock, Temba Bavuma, Rassie Van Der Dussen, and Aiden Markram were dismissed in quick time.
Every bowler from the Netherlands bowled extremely well. South African batters struggled against the Dutch bowlers. Barring David Miller, every other batter seemed to struggle in the middle. The South African tailenders tried their best to revive the match. But the match was already out of South Africa's hands. In the end, the Netherlands reigned supreme, as they claimed their second win in multination tournaments against South Africa in the last year or so.
