Indian fans left frustrated after Shreyas Iyer falls for just four runs as the short ball ploy comes to haunt him again during England in Lucknow on Sunday during the ODI World Cup 2023 game.

Shreyas Iyer for years has been known as a very promising and talented young batter for India. The 28-year-old has been exposed on many occasions when he has been dismissed to the short ball. It was the same story on Sunday versus England in Lucknow during the ODI World Cup 2023 game.

It was a key game for defending World Cup winners England who took on India on Sunday. There was a huge crowd to witness the 30th game of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. England needed a win to keep their hopes alive after their dismal showing so far.

Rohit Sharma and his Indian team were asked to bat first after Jos Buttler won the toss. Both teams came into the game without making any changes to their playing XI. It caught everyone by surprise that Ravichandran Ashwin wasn’t given a place in the team. 

Short ball problems persist for Shreyas Iyer –

The Indian team had lost their first two wickets quite early in the game. Chris Woakes had got rid of Shubman Gill, while David Willey had got rid of Virat Kohli. The Indian team for the first during the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament were under pressure.

Mark Wood was introduced into the attack once Jos Buttler saw Shreyas Iyer stride into the wicket. It was Chris Woakes who did the damage with the ball when he softened Shreyas Iyer to create the pressure.

After playing 15 balls, the 28-year-old was starting to feel the pressure as Iyer was dished with another short. This time Shreyas Iyer bit the bait and went for a mistimed pull shot only to offer Mark Wood an easy catch.

Jos Buttler’s introduction of Mark Wood and persisting with Chris Woakes had worked wonders. The wicket of Shreyas Iyer left India struggling at 40 for 3 in the 12th over to leave India in trouble.

Rohit Sharma also was left stunned at the scenes he was witnessing unfold right in front of his eyes. The Indian skipper was as dejected as the departing Shreyas Iyer in what was a huge game for the Indian Cricket Team.
