In the 44th game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, England and Pakistan played each other in Kolkata. Ahead of the game, both teams were eliminated from the semis as they had lost quite a many games. Even though the Asian side was alive for the race, the team had an improbable scenario to achieve to reach the top four.

Things went worse as the Three Lions won the toss and elected to bat first. Thanks to this, the distant dream of reaching the semis became quite an impossible task for the 1992 winners. With the bat, England openers Dawid Malan (31) and Jonny Bairstow (59) put together 81 runs for the first wicket. For the first time after the Bangladesh game, the openers did well.

After both players got out and the team was reduced to 108/2, the likes of Ben Stokes and Joe Root took the team forward. Both added 132 runs for the fourth wicket. With Buttler, Harry Brook, and David Willey playing cameos, the team reached 337/9. For the Asian side, Haris Rauf took three wickets while Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr. took two each. On the other hand, Iftikhar Ahmed took a wicket as well.

In reply, the Green Brigade had an impossible task to achieve, i.e. chasing 338 runs in just 6.4 overs by scoring more than six runs every ball. This was an impossible task going into the chase. Talking about the chase, they lost their openers for 10 runs. Apart from a 51-run partnership, the team was never in the chase. At one point, the team was reduced to 191/9. Haris Rauf (35) played an entertaining cameo and took the team to 240 all-out, losing the game by 91 runs.

David Willey, who was playing his last game for his country, took three wickets and took more than 100 wickets in his ODI career.
