The runners-up of the ODI World Cup 2019, New Zealand have announced their squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, in India. The batting superstar Kane Williamson will be leading the side once again in the marquee international tournament. Notably, nobody has forgotten how unlucky the day of July 14, 2019, for New Zealand in the final of the ODI World Cup 2019; the Blackcaps came very close to glory but it still went so far from them just with some last-moment turnarounds of fate in that historic match.
Meanwhile, the star all-rounder James Neesham has opened up on his side’s chances of winning the ODI World Cup 2023 by taking some lessons from the horrific evening of the ODI World Cup final at the Lord’s. Neesham had also spoken a lot of times about that Lord’s final; this time, he mentioned a crack that New Zealand might apply in the upcoming 13th edition of the World Cup.
"There's certainly huge motivation from the guys to give it one last, good crack." - James Neesham
"I think it's motivated all of us. Trent (Boult) has talked about it as well, around a few of the guys back then talking about giving it one more crack in four years' time. It's come around pretty quickly, really, with all the events since 2019 in the world,” said Neesham to the journalists after the selectors announced New Zealand for the ODI World Cup 2023.
“We've got that generation from 30 to 35 years old. We've all played a huge amount over the last 10-12 years and there's certainly huge motivation from the guys to give it one last, good crack,” he added later.
The 32-year-old has also been picked in New Zealand’s World Cup squad; he will be one of the vital cogs in the wheel for the Kiwis to strengthen their contention for the title.
