Chennai faced Kane Williamson's Hyderabad in the 46th encounter of the Indian T20 League 2022 on Sunday. While chasing a high target of 203, the orange army came close but could not go all the way through. They lost the match by 13 runs.
At the start of their innings, Abhishek Sharma was scoring quickly, giving Kane Williamson some time to settle in the middle. However, the Kiwi player could not take complete advantage of this opportunity. His strike rate in the game was always low and the pressure kept building on the team. The team skipper ended up scoring 47 runs in 37 balls at a strike rate of 127, which was not enough in a high scoring chase. Towards the end, Nicholas Pooran tried his best to get the team across the line but fell short. The equation came down to 38 runs in the last over. Pooran tried his best and scored 24 runs in the final over but to no avail.
Meanwhile, Williamson has not been at his best this season. In the nine matches that he has played, he has scored 195 runs at a strike rate of 99.5. Many have opined that these stats are not of the T20 standards. The fans took to Twitter and slammed Williamson for his below par performances.
A fan suggested that he shouldn't have accepted the huge price of 14 crores as his performances has been substandard. "If I was Williamson I myself wouldn't have accepted 14 crores..." he wrote.
Another fan stated that Williamson had got away with other players performing around him. He even blamed Williamson for the loss against Chennai. "Williamson got Away with his bowlers bowling well and players like Tripathi, Markram scoring runs. Today the whole responsibility on the defeat should be on his head," he wrote.
Here is what the fans had to say
In a properly critical media environment Danny Morrison would have asked Williamson what on earth he was doing with the bat today. That was in incredibly clear example of a match loosing innings.

Williamson faced 12 of his 36 balls in this innings inside the powerplay, and yet managed only 47 chasing 203.

Timely reminder : Kane Williamson is a painfully average T20 batsman.

Painfully average? That's being modest. He is absolutely dreadful.
