Kolkata beat Mumbai by 52 runs in the 56th encounter of the Indian T20 League 2022 to keep their playoff hopes alive. A brilliant bowling display by Mumbai's ace, Jasprit Bumrah, restricted Kolkata to a below-par total. In return, Kolkata also bowled brilliantly as Andre Russell and Pat Cummins took the responsibility for the defence.

After winning the toss at the DY Patil Stadium, Rohit Sharma chose to bowl first. The men in purple got off to a fast start, with Venkatesh Iyer's blazing knock. He scored 43 runs in 24 balls before being dismissed in the sixth over. Following that, Nitish Rana hit some lusty blows but wickets kept tumbling on the other end.

Kolkata lost Rahane (25) and Shreyas Iyer (six) for a team score of 123 in 13.1 overs. After that, it was the complete Jasprit Bumrah show. He bowled brilliantly and did not allow batters to get settled. He took two wickets in the 15th over, and three in the 17th.  Conceding one run in his final two overs, Bumrah ended with the figures of 10/5 in his four overs. His spell ensured that Kolkata, who looked set for a 200+ score, settled for 165-9.

Mumbai got off to the worst possible start in the chase and lost Rohit Sharma (two) and Tilak Varma (six) inside the powerplay. Mumbai only scored 37 runs in the first six overs. With Suryakumar Yadav missing, the team's lineup was not the strongest. Ramandeep Singh and Ishan Kishan were trying to settle down in the middle, which affected the scoring rate. They added 37 runs in the partnership before Mumbai lost Singh (12) and the following batter Tim David (13) in quick succession, leaving the team tottering at 83-4 in 13th over.

Pat Cummins bowled the 15th over and extended the pressure on the men in blue by taking three wickets. He took the wickets of Kishan (51), Daniel Sams (one), and Murugan Ashwin (0) to reduce Mumbai to 102/7 in 15 overs. They  needed 64 runs in the final five overs with Pollard carrying the all the burden. However, a miracle didn't happen as Mumbai were all-out for 113 runs. Kolkata gained two points to keep the playoff hopes alive.
