Although it was an expected start for the defending champions Gujarat with a win in the tournament opener against Chennai in the ongoing Indian T20 League 2023. But they faced a major blow as the veteran batter Kane Williamson got injured while fielding during the first innings. He happened to land on his right knee while attempting to stop a six smashed by Chennai batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The physios immediately rushed to Kane and attended him to the medical care. Later on, the 32-year-old was ruled out of the match due to the injury. Now, in a recent piece of news and disappointment for Gujarat fans, the former New Zealand skipper has left the Gujarat camp and is ruled out of the tournament.

Earlier, skipper Hardik Pandya also talked about Kaneโs injury in the initial phase when journalists happened to ask him for an update regarding the same.
"It is knee (injury) for sure but I don't have any update about what exactly has happened. I don't know how serious the injury is and how much time it will take (to heal). Right now, there is no time frame, I had just messaged him. He (Williamson) has gone for the scans, once he comes back after the scans and doctors check (on him), then only we will be able to know what exactly it is,โ said Hardik after the win against Chennai.
Later on, the head coach of New Zealandโs national team, Gary Stead also expressed concern over the injury of the veteran batter.
"Our first thoughts are obviously with him, we're not sure at this stage of the severity of the injury. He's being assessed in the next 24-48 hours, so we will know more after that," said Stead.
