Afghanistan is set to host Pakistan for a 3-match T20I series and as many ODI games in the UAE. This encounter is likely to occur as Afghanistan’s star all-rounder Mohammad Nabi recently met the Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan. It was known that the all-rounder had asked the Pakistan Prime Minister to arrange a series between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan and Afghanistan have played against each other in ICC and Asian Cricket Council events. However, both sides have never played a bilateral series at the senior level. Afghanistan had also sent its team to Pakistan several times to play against the A-sides.
Earlier, the Afghanistan players had urged the Pakistani premier to do something and start bilateral series between the two teams at the senior level. However, the PCB is looking for a window for conducting the series when the team returns from West Indies in August.
Asia Cup 2020 postponed to 2022, with Pakistan keeping the hosting rights
Prime Minister Imran Khan, who still has ties with PCB has requested the board to organize a series with Afghanistan. Afghanistan cricket team plays their home series in India generally. However, they last played their home series against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi. The meeting between Nabi and the Prime Minister went quite well. It could also be an excellent opportunity for Afghanistan to get a series added to their Future Tour Programme (FTP). Talking about Pakistan’s schedule for the year, the Men in Green will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in July against England. Pakistan will also play against New Zealand in September. After that, they will take part in the ICC T20 World Cup held in India.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asia Cup T20 2021 has once again been postponed to 2022, with Pakistan keeping the hosting rights. The last time Pakistan and Afghanistan faced each other was back in the year 2019, during the ICC ODI World Cup. The match between the two teams went till the last over, but Pakistan ended on the winning side. Pakistan has won all four ODIs against Afghanistan to date. The two teams have also met in Sharjah in 2013 for a single T20I game, and Pakistan also won that match. That was the only T20I game that the teams played.
