Pakistan is likely to host the 2022 season of the Asia Cup, while Sri Lanka is going to host the competition in 2023. The Asia Cup 2021 has been postponed and it is now known that the competition will be played in consecutive years, 2022 and 2023. Initially, the tournament was planned to be held last year in Pakistan. Later, the venue for the tournament was changed from Pakistan to Sri Lanka. The contest was to be played in September of 2020 to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia. However, it was then further moved forward as the T20 World Cup got postponed to 2021. Due to the pandemic, the BCCI also decided to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) in September-November 2020 in UAE.
Six teams were scheduled to take part in the competition
India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Malaysia were the countries scheduled to take part in the competition. Earlier, PCB chief Ehsan Mani had indicated that Asia Cup 2021 might get postponed once again this year. The tournament is now going to take place in 2022. This can mainly be because India has qualified for the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The final is going to be played from June 18-22 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Team India will play against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the final. Considering this, there won’t be much time to host the Asia Cup as the IPL 2021 will also end on May 30.
The current season of the tournament was supposed to be played in the T20 format, unlike the regular 50-overs. This would have ensured all the participating teams an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. India is set to host the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup in October this year. However, this will not be the first instance that the competition has been called off. The Asia Cup was initially planned for 2020. However, the Covid-19 pandemic ensured that it was postponed for an indefinite time. The competition was last played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2018 across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Notably, team India has won the championship for the last two times. India had won the previous season of the Asia Cup in 2018 after defeating Bangladesh by three wickets. The final of the Asia Cup was played in Dubai.
