Ace Australian spinner Nathan Lyon took a five-wicket haul in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Saturday. India, led by Rohit Sharma, started the day 2 from 21/0 and soon got trapped by Lyon as they slipped to 179/7 by the end of the second session.

In the first session of the day, India lost captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Shreyas Iyer. All of them succumbed to Lyon as he first trapped KL Rahul in front of the wicket and broke the opening partnership of 46 runs. After that, Lyon dismissed Rohit as the India skipper missed a straight bowl and failed to convert a good start into big innings.

Just two balls later, in the same over, Lyon trapped Cheteshwar Pujara and dismissed him for a duck in his 100th Test match. India moved to 54 for 3 in no time and were under pressure against the Aussies. However, former captain Virat Kohli, along with Shreyas Iyer, tried to build a partnership to rescue India. Although, Iyer failed to score more and became Lyon’s fourth wicket before Lunch.

Wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat became Lyon’s fifth wicket as he was caught by Steven Smith. He scored 6 runs off 12 balls and failed to build any partnership for the team. However, Nathan Lyon becomes the overall third and first Australian to take 100 wickets in Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India legend Anil Kumble leads the tally with more than 111 wickets in 20 matches.

India failed to take any lead in the first innings

India, with the help of allrounder Axar Patel’s combative knock, posted 262/10 and trailed visitors by 1 run. Axar, in his well-made innings, scored another half-century. He amassed 74 runs off 115 balls with the help of three 6s and nine 4s. Apart from Axar, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli also played vital knocks for the team. Ashwin scored 37 runs off 71 balls, while Kohli scored 44 runs off 84 balls.

Meanwhile, fans react to Nathan Lyon’s majestic bowling and called him the greatest spinner in Australia. A twitter user wrote,

“Shane Warne will be most happy soul now.”
