Welsh Fire marched into their eighth game of the season after losing all of their previous matches in this season of The Hundred. They competed against the in-form Trent Rockets, who won five of their first seven matches. The Fire skipper Josh Cobb clinched the initial test as he won the toss and chose to chase down the total. However, right after the toss, the entire momentum switched in favour of the Rockets as their openers Dawid Malan and Alex Hales started to thrash the Fire openers right from ball one.
A fifty from Malan and a well-made thirty from Alex Hales steadied the ship for the yellow team to set a big total. The batters toyed with the Fire bowlers as they kept smashing boundaries on every other ball. It started to get worse for the worst-performing team of the season once Daniel Sams entered the ground. The Rockets' batters piled up as many as 172 runs after losing four wickets at the end of the first innings.
The pressure was on the Fire openers to clinch the first-ever win for the team. However, the openers disappointed as they raced back to the pavilion as soon as they took guard, putting their team in a tough situation. With not much left to do with the bat, Matt Critchley kept the hopes alive for his team, while the batters at the other end kept playing irresponsibly. The former ran out of balls in the second innings to chase down the total as they lost their eighth consecutive match of the season by 29 runs.
Ish Sodhi, David Payne and George Scrimshaw were poor with the ball for the Fire as they couldn't restrict the Rockets for a lesser total. Tom Banton has only one forty-plus score in his last five innings for Welsh Fire and Joe Clarke had a poor run with the bat. The lack of responsibility from the openers and the absence of quality death bowlers forced the Fire out of the season.
Here's how the Twitter community reacted for the same:
Really feel sorry for Welsh Fire in this #TheHundred competition. They just can't seem to get enough players (who are great) into any sort of form. Such a shame.
