In 2011, the Indian cricket team became the first-ever host country to lift the trophy after chasing a mighty total of 275. It was the highest chase in a World Cup final, and India won the match by six wickets. While the top performers were Gambhir (97) and Dhoni (91 not out), it was a whole team effort in a gruelling competition held in the subcontinent.

Some of the players from the 2011 team, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, etc., were also part of the 2003 World Cup. In that year, the Men in Blue returned as runners-up after losing to Australia in the final in Johannesburg. Thus, the cricketers knew the pain of losing a World Cup final, and, hence, these players were riding high on emotions after the historic win. Sourav Ganguly, who led the team in the 2003 World Cup, also played a crucial role in India's 2011 win as it was under him that the likes of Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni were nurtured and prepared for the future.

Many Indian players from the 2011 batch congratulated the country on their historic accomplishment through social media. Since the 2011 World Cup, team India reached the semi-finals of the following two editions but ended up on the losing note both times. Meanwhile, the cricket fanatics are now briskly waiting for their third ODI World Cup title as the next edition is also going to take place in India in 2023.
