The 38th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 between Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants saw the visitors create history. In the match played at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the visitors registered the second-highest score in the history of the tournament.

After winning the toss, Punjab chose to bat first on an excellent batting surface. This choice paid off well for the visitors, as Kyle Mayers got off to a flying start. While his opening partner, KL Rahul, did not provide much assistance, Mayers was not in the mood to waste time. He delivered boundaries with a rapid knock.

He scored 54 runs in 24 balls in an innings that included seven boundaries and four sixes. His dominance, however, did not last long after the powerplay, as he was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada on the fifth delivery of the sixth over.

The team's heavy lifting was then done by Ayush Badoni and Marcus Stoinis after that. For the third wicket partnership, the two added 122 runs and spared no bowler. While Stonis went on to score 72 runs in 40 balls, Bandoni cheekily lost his wicket after scoring 43 runs in 23 balls.

In the end, Nicholas Pooran played the perfect cameo of 45 runs in just 19 balls before losing his wicket to Arshdeep Singh in the last over. The Super Giants managed to score 257/5 in their innings, which is also the second-highest score in the history of the tournament.

The target proved to be too good for PBKS

The chase did not start well for the Kings as they lost both their overs within the 4th over for a score of 31 runs. After that, Atharva Taide and Sikandar Raza built a crucial partnership of 78 runs and tried to keep up with the required run rate. Taide (66 runs in 36 balls) went on to score his maiden half-century in the IPL with a massive strike rate of 183.

The target was simply too high for the home team, who lost several wickets while trying to sustain the required run rate. While Punjab scored more than 200 runs, they fell far short of the target. In the end, Lucknow Super Giants beat Punjab Kings by 56 runs as the latter was all out for a score of 201.
