Punjab firm on naming this destructive player as their skipper for 2022 season

The 2022 season of the Indian T20 League will be a spectacle as all the teams have been transformed. The Punjab team showed a lot of faith in Mayank Agarwal as he was retained by the franchise. He has been a great performer for them by being one of the most successful batters for the team in the last two seasons.

He captained in one of the matches in the 2021 season in KL Rahul's absence and it was assumed that he will lead the team in 2022 as a full-time captain, but there never was a certainty. There were a few options for captaincy when the team was formed in the mega auction. A few believed that Shikhar Dhawan could also lead the side given his experience.

However, as reported by sources, Mayank Agarwal indeed will lead the side in 2022. He has not had many chances to lead the team, but he is very capable of doing that. Agarwal has a good team that can support him in his run as a captain. Players like Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, and Kagiso Rabada bring a lot of experience to the team.

"In all likelihood, Mayank will captain the side. The announcement is expected later this week. Dhawan is a welcome addition to the side and was always on the radar at the auction. He is a champion player but it seems Punjab were keen on Mayank as captain ever since KL Rahul left the team," said an ITL source.

Many teams have opted for younger captains and have gotten great results in doing so. Punjab has not been the best in the tournament, but that can change with Agarwal as the team's captain.

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal has been selected in the Test series against Sri Lanka. He will be the primary opener along with Rohit Sharma in the absence of KL Rahul. The 31-year old has had a few good performances in the longest format. He will now be looking to make the most out of this as India has a tough competition for the opening slot.
