Mayank Agarwal has been named the skipper of the Punjab team for the 2022 season of the Indian T20 League. It was assumed by many pandits that Agarwal will be the obvious choice to lead the team as the franchise showed a lot of trust in him. They retained him ahead of the season, which was the first sign for him leading the team.
In an Instagram video post shared by Punjab's official handle, they confirmed the new development. "I am honored and happy to be leading Punjab Kings in the IPL 2022. Let's do it this time, Buuraaaah!" Mayank Agarwal said in the voice-over of the video.

This, however, is not the first time Mayank Agarwal will be leading the side. In 2021, when KL Rahul was not available for a match in the first half, Agarwal was the stand-in captain. This role suited him well as he scored 99 runs in the only match that he captained.
The 31-year old now has a good team to lead as the franchise did well in mega auction earlier this month. They were able to get marquee players like Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, and Jonny Bairstow on their side. They also were able to re-buy some of their uncapped star players in Shahrukh Khan and Harpreet Brar.
Punjab has never been able to win the championship, and they also have only played in the final only once. This season, they will be hoping for that to change with Mayank Agarwal as their captain. They have been a consistent team for the last two seasons and will still look to improve on that this year.
