Punjab beat Mumbai by 12 runs in the 23rd match of the Indian T20 League 2022. After winning the toss Mumbai deciding to bowl first at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan had the perfect start for Punjab as the skipper did not waste any time scoring quick runs. Dhawan played the role of an anchor in the innings, while Agarwal kept the scoreboard ticking. The duo added 65 runs in the first six overs without losing a wicket. Agarwal went on to score his first half-century of the season by hitting a six to Tymal Mills in the ninth over.

Murugan Ashwin finally got the first breakthrough as he dismissed the 31-year-old. The skipper added 52 runs in 32 balls, hitting six boundaries and two sixes in the innings. Dhawan continued to maintain the run rate while two more wickets fell on the other end. Jonny Bairstow was bowled out by Jaydev Unadkat in the 14th over, and Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the in-form Liam Livingstone with an excellent yorker in the 15th over. The men in red lost their third wicket for a score of 130.

In the meantime, Dhawan reached his fifty, and then went on to score 70 runs in 50 balls. He hit five fours and three sixes before he was dismissed by Basil Thampi in the 17th over. Jitesh Sharma (30 runs in 15 balls) and Shahrukh Khan (15 runs in 6 balls) played handy cameos towards the end before Khan fell to Thampi in the final over. Punjab managed to score 198 runs in the first innings.

In the chase, Mumbai once again failed to capitalize on a decent start. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan scored 31 runs for the first wicket partnership. Rohit Sharma was the first dismissal of the innings. Kagiso Rabada dismissed him with a quicker delivery in the 4th over. Kishan followed soon as he gave away his wicket to Vaibhav Arora. Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma were at the crease at this time, and Mumbai reached 42 runs in the powerplay.

Brevis exploded in the ninth over as he hit Rahul Chahar for 29 runs, with four sixes and a four. Varma also added a few quick runs in the next over. Brevis could not hold on to his wicket as he fell to Odean Smith in the 11th over when Mumbai were 116. He added 49 runs, with four boundaries and five sixes. Suryakumar Yadav then walked in to crease. However, the men in blue and gold lost two wickets in unfortunate run-outs. They lost Tilak Varma (36 runs in 20 balls) and Kieron Pollard (10 runs in 11 balls) by the 17th over. They then needed 47 runs in 23 balls to win.

Suryakumar Yadav tried his best to take his team through, but he fell to Rabada in the penultimate over. He scored 43 runs in 30 balls, which consisted of a four and four sixes. With his dismissal, Mumbai's last hope ended. Odean Smith bowled the last over and took three wickets to restrict Mumbai to 186 runs. He got the wickets of Unadkat, Bumrah and Mills in the final over to complete his four-wicket haul.
