Shuttler from India PV Sindhu stood up to her expectations as the tournament favourite, defeating Michelle Li in the final 21-15, 21-13 to win the Commonwealth Games 2022 women's singles gold medal. This is her third CWG singles medal, having previously won bronze in Glasgow in 2014 and silver in Gold Coast in 2018.

Despite some early stumbles, Sindhu easily won the final set against Li. However, the Indian ace improved throughout the match and was in red-hot form in the second game. With this win, India's medal tally reached 56, and the gold tally reached 19. The Indian contingent currently is in the fourth position in the standings. Australia leads the way with a total of 174 medals.

Sindhu had a strong start in the first game of the final, leading 4-2. The Canadian quickly came back to level the match at 6-6 as both athletes exchanged blow for blow until Sindhu pushed ahead with a three-point lead, taking the score to 11-8.

The world number seven then capitalised on the momentum, charging ahead to push the score to 15-9. Michelle Li quickly fought her way back, cutting Sindhu's advantage to 17-14. Until the Indian fired on the thrusters, racing past to win the first game 21-15.

The second game started with both shuttlers playing some fierce badminton. The Indian extended her advantage to 11-6 during the mid-game break. Sindhu came out fighting after the break, not letting her Canadian opponent get set by claiming successive points. After several long and high-pressure rallies, the 27-year-old maintained her lead and increased the score to 17-12, eventually winning the game 21-13.

Wishes started pouring for the gold medalist after the match. "The brilliance of @Pvsindhu1 creates history once again! You had us glued to our tv screens! What an amazing show of excellence and determination! Congratulations on a remarkable GOLD #CWG2022! PV SINDHU you are India’s PRIDE!" wrote Anurag Thakur.
