The 31-year-old batsman is the son of an army colonel. He took up cricket as his passion when his father, who is a former state junior cricketer for Uttar Pradesh, was posted in Pune. Rahul Tripathi had made his IPL debut with the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2017. After that, the batsman played the next two seasons for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) before being traded to KKR in 2020. He was traded to KKR for ₹60 lakh. The Eoin Morgan-led team are currently struggling at the seventh spot with only two wins from their seven games. Before the suspension of IPL 2021 due to rising COVID-19 cases inside the teams' bio-bubbles, Rahul Tripathi was one of the best performers for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Rahul Tripathi is the franchise's second-highest run-scorer in the 14th IPL season

This year, KKR tried around three different batters in each of the No. 4 and No. 5 slots across all seven games. There was a frequent change of hands at the No. 6 and 7 spots as well, between Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik. However, denying claims of any instability, Rahul Tripathi impressed everyone at the middle order. Rahul Tripathi is the franchise's second-highest run-scorer in the 14th IPL season. He has accumulated 187 runs at an average of 26.71, while his strike rate reads 135.5.

Earlier, Two Kolkata Knight Riders players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier had tested positive for Covid-19. Notably, Kolkata Knight Riders had suffered a Covid scare even before the tournament began. Opening batsman Nitish Rana had contracted the virus. Thus, problems remain abundant for KKR, who are already struggling at the seventh position in the IPL 2021 points table. Kolkata Knight Riders have only won 2 wins from 7 games.
