Rajat Patidar wreaked havoc at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday, May 25, with one of the best knocks in Indian T20 League knockout rounds history. In the Eliminator, the Bangalore batter smashed 112 not out from 54 balls in a remarkable exhibition of courageous hitting against Lucknow.
Patidar, however, was not planned to be at Eden Gardens, carrying Bangalore's batting attack. After being unsold in the mega auction in February, he was set to get married in May. The 28-year-old played four matches and hit 71 runs last season before being released by Bangalore. They did not bid on him in the mega auction, but due to an injury to Luvnith Sisodia, Patidar was brought in as a replacement player.
"The plan was to get him married on May 9. It was supposed to be a small function and I had booked a hotel too in Indore. The marriage was not supposed to be a grand affair, so we didn't get invitation cards printed. I have booked a hotel for limited guests but the booking has been advanced as we plan to hold the function in July once he is free from his responsibility with the Madhya Pradesh Ranji team," Patidar's father told The New Indian Express.
The young batter became the star of the game and the talk of the town as he guided the team to a victory. Everyone was very impressed with his batting display, including former team captain Virat Kohli. The 33-year old said that Patidar's 112 was one of the best innings that he had ever seen in a pressure situation.
"That was one of the best innings I have ever seen under pressure. And I have seen many. That level of striking, that is some batting level. Watch out for him," Kohli said. Notably, Patidar became the first uncapped player to hit a century in the playoffs of the Indian T20 League.
The Bangalore team will now play against Rajasthan in the second qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the 27th of May.
