Indian Cricketers Ashwin and Pandey were impressed by Darren Stevens's performance in a County match on Friday. The 45-year-old batsman scored 190 out of 149 balls.
Darren Stevens batted at number 7 against Glamorgan on the second day of the match in Canterbury. His magnificent knock lifted Kent, his team, to competitive first innings of 307.
Indian women’s cricketer Shikha Pandey alluded Darren on Twitter. She appreciated his brilliant counter-attacking innings. She wrote that Darren Smith is an incredible cricketer. Ravichandran Ashwin agreed with what Pandey wrote on Twitter.
Darren Stevens’ stint with the bat lifted Kent to a good place. At one point the team had collapsed to 128 for 8. Darren Stevens and Miguel Cummins then took the reins of batting in their hand on the ninth wicket. They put 166 on board for the team. Darren Smith, during that innings, hit 15 fours and equal sixes. He was dismissed when he was 10 short of a well-earned 200. In the partnership, Miguel Cummings contribution was just 1 off 55 balls. Cummings was the last man out. Labuschagne bowled him out. Michael Neser and Timm Van der Gugten were the bowlers of Glamorgan.
When Glamorgan came out to bat, the day got even better for Darren Stevens. He tricked Labuschagne lbw for 11 off 14. After 14 overs, the Glamorgan’s were 31 for 2.
At 45, Darren Stevens, the veteran cricketer, is still going strong
He made his debut in 1997. To date, he has featured in over 300 first-class games. He has 16000 runs to his name. Stevens hit his 36th hundred in first-class cricket on Friday. He has claimed more than 560 wickets to date and has 30 five-wicket hauls. Stevens also has the experience of more than 300 List A games and 200 T20 games.
In September 2019, he scored his career-best of 237 against Yorkshire in Leeds. He rescued Kent from 39 for 5 batting first. Darren Stevens and captain Sam billings added 346 for the sixth wicket. He had performed impressively with the ball as well with figures of 5 for 20.
Darren Stevens was informed that his contract with Kent won’t be renewed. But they had to make a U-turn following Stevens match-winning performances.
