Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin might no longer be in the plans for India in white-ball cricket. He was not selected for India's T20 and ODI teams for the England series. A BCCI official has now confirmed that Ashwin might not play in the T20 World Cup 2022 either.

To worsen the situation, Ashwin is no longer the first-choice spinner in the SENA countries in Tests. Instead, Ravindra Jadeja is the preferred option because of his batting abilities.

"There is a lot of competition for the 2nd spinner role. And we are looking at all-rounders for that particular role. There are Jadeja, Hooda and other wrist spinners who have done better than Ashwin in white-ball. So, for now, he is not in plans for white-ball formats," a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Ashwin's underwhelming batting performance is the primary reason for him being dropped out. Jadeja, who has been able to give all-rounded performances, has emerged as the primary option in all formats of the game. The BCCI official, though, refused the ruling out of Ashwin in SENA countries. He stated that his inclusion is up to the team management. Ashwin will come in if the conditions allow, he said.

With India's four-pacer formula doing well in overseas conditions, it seems doubtful that the two-spinners and three-pacers formula would return anytime soon.

"Ashwin is crucial to our plans in Test, especially at home and sub-continent. He will continue to be a crucial member. It is up to the team management when and how they want to use him. But with such knocks (century at Edgbaston), you cannot ignore Jadeja in any format," the BCCI official said.

Meanwhile, in the rescheduled fifth Test match at Edgbaston, Jadeja hit a stunning century. After losing early wickets, he produced a magnificent innings to put India in a solid position. Along with Rishabh Pant, he added 222 runs for the sixth-wicket partnership to take the team total to 416 in the first innings.
