Surrey recently announced on their Twitter account that Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will play for them before the Test against England. In the post, Ashwin was seen wearing the team’s jersey.
Ashwin is ready to play in the County Championship starting from 11th July. He will play for the Surrey team that will face Somerset at the Oval. Indian spinner, Aswin has decided to sacrifice his break to better prepare for the England series. After the humiliating loss in the World Test Championship final, the Indian team would desperately want to secure a win in the upcoming series.
Ashwin also commented about his decision to play for Surrey. He stated that it is a privilege for him to get the chance to play for Surrey. This will mark his third County stint. Previously, Ashwin had played for Worcestershire in 2017 and Nottinghamshire in 2019. Ashwin had performed brilliantly in the 2019 season. He had taken 34 wickets at an impressive average of 24.59.
Ravichandran Ashwin will play a crucial role to help India secure a win against England in the five-match Test series
After the County stint, Ashwin would be a force to reckon with in England. He has repeatedly failed to perform in England while for India. In the 2018 tour of England, he took only 11 wickets in four games. But in the recently concluded WTC Final, Ashwin gave a good performance. He took four wickets out of the twelve that India managed to get. Ashwin bowled with good control and gave away fewer runs. It was a pace-friendly wicket but Ashwin played well considering the English conditions. He managed to maintain an economy of under two during the title match against New Zealand.
Ashwin can add variety to the Indian bowling attack with his technique. That would help India dominate the English team during the series. Moreover, he has also worked on his batting skills and has improved his ability to contribute with the bat.
To date, Ashwin has taken 413 wickets in 78 Test matches and scored five centuries. He would be desperate to improve his record in England and perform accordingly.
