Senior cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the notables left out of the 2023 Asia Cup squad announced by the Indian Cricket Board on Monday, August 21. The veteran spinner has once again failed to make the cut in a major tournament and some fans were disappointed with the selectors' decision. The 17-member squad led by Rohit Sharma will have the spin services of Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.

Chahal was not selected for India's 2021 T20 World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup. Now he has missed out on making the Asia Cup squad, which means he is likely to be dropped from the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is less than two months away. Chahal has not been impressive in recent times, while Kuldeep Yadav has been successful at it. Reacting to Chahal's snub, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said that it is difficult to field two wrist spinners in a team and Kuldeep is currently a bit ahead.

“He’s been a terrific performer for India, but sometimes it’s just the balance of the team or the combination. You are looking at guys. Axar Patel’s done really well. He can bat as well. Kuldeep’s obviously had a fantastic run. To fit two wrist-spinners might be difficult," Agarkar said.

"You can also fit 15, at this point 17, we are a little bit fortunate we can take a couple of extra guys. Otherwise, to fit two wrist-spinners. Unfortunately, one has to miss out. I think, at this point, Kuldeep’s a little bit ahead. He gives us a different kind of option. Unfortunately, he has to miss out,” the 45-year-old added.

Doors are not closed for anyone: Rohit Sharma

The preference given to Kuldeep is not surprising as the left-arm chinaman has had an excellent Caribbean tour. His four-wicket haul for six runs in just three overs was the highlight of India's massive win in the first ODI in Barbados. He continued his good form in the T20I series as well, while a disappointing campaign saw Chahal take just five wickets at an average of 32.60 and an economy rate of 9.05.

Meanwhile, captain Rohit has given a glimmer of hope for Chahal that the doors are still open for all spinners for the ODI World Cup. “We couldn’t get Chahal in as we had only 17 slots. Doors are not closed for anyone, including R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Washington Sundar, for the World Cup.”
