Virender Sehwag and Rishabh Pant

Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag believes Rishabh Pant could be India's next big player if he learns how to bat for full 50 overs. Rishabh Pant showcased his talent with the willow in the recent ODI series against England. Pant smashed a 40-ball 77 in the first ODI. The 23-year old helped KL Rahul add 113 runs in 80 balls to take the hosts to 336 in 50 overs.

In the third ODI, Pant played in a similar way. The keeper-batsman attacked the visitors and added 99 runs in 73 balls with Hardik Pandya. He top-scored with 78 off 62 balls, consisting of five boundaries and four sixes. It gave India 329 to defend, and the team won the match by seven runs. His contributions helped the hosts win the series 2-1, and Sehwag also feels that he is the biggest positive that has come out of the series. On top of that, the former opening batsman, who was known for his explosive batting style, added that the youngster reminds him of his early days.

Rishabh Pant should learn to capitalize on his starts and convert those in hundreds: Virender Sehwag

The 42-year-old, however, feels that the left-hander should learn to capitalize on his starts and convert those in hundreds. In the 3rd ODI against England, Pant missed out on his maiden ODI century as he got out before the 40th over. The former opener also stated that if the youngster can develop the habit of converting his fifties to hundreds, he would be the next superstar in white-ball format. Adding that a batter can sometimes encounter a slow pitch and where shot-making is not easy, Sehwag pointed out that Pant should also know how to get out of such situations.

Sehwag also indicated that the youngster might have changed something with respect to his batting, which was why he was able to score runs. The former signed off by stating that Pant should learn to bat until the end of the innings in both ODIs and T20Is.

Rishabh Pant will now be seen in action for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 as their new captain. Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury.
