India's wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant is now the fastest Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score 1,000 runs in Test cricket. The youngster has exceeded the record of the former captain MS Dhoni. Rishabh Pant has achieved this feat during the second day of the fourth Test between India and Australia in Brisbane Cricket Ground.
Pant has been dedicated as the successor to former wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni. However, his inconsistencies with the bat have not yet made him a regular Indian squad member across all the formats. In this year's Border Gavaskar series, the middle-order batsman has impressed everyone with his attacking in the drawn Sydney Test.
The 23-year-old now averages 53.50 and has also scored more than half of his Test runs in Australia.
Rishabh Pant registers fastest 1000 runs as a wicket-keeper batsman
Rishabh Pant has scored 1000 runs in 27 innings whereas MS Dhoni took 32 innings. To date, the young batsman has represented India in 15 Tests. He has smashed two centuries in the matches, and three fifties including a best of 159 run not out. Pant has also featured in 16 ODIs and 28 T20Is. He has scored a combined 784 runs across the two formats.
Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni has featured in 90 Tests and aggregated 4876 runs. This included six centuries and 33 fifties including a best of 224. The veteran has played 350 ODIs and scored 10773 runs at an average of 50.57. He has also hit ten centuries and 73 fifties in the white-ball format.
Playing 98 T20 international games, the former Indian cricketer gathered 1617 runs which also includes two half-centuries. Dhoni is widely acknowledged as one of the finest captains to have played the sport.
All the record shows that he Dhoni is the most successful Indian captain to have led India, winning three ICC titles in T20 World Cup, one ODI World Cup and one Champions Trophy during an illustrious career. Rishabh Pant has a tough competition in Wriddhiman Saha when it comes to the game's most extended format. However, he will be hoping to secure the wicket-keeper's spot in the coming years.
In the white-ball format, the team now has a handy option in KL Rahul. The opening batsman has proved himself in all the forms of the game. Regardless, considering Pant's potential across all the formats, it won't take too long before for him to become a regular member of the squad in white-ball cricket as well.
