Ishant Sharma and Rohit Sharma will not be part of the Test series against Australia. The Test series is to commence from December 17 in Adelaide. The Indian team will be playing three ODIs and three T20Is before that.
The Indian opener was originally left out of all three squads but later on added to the Test contingent as a replacement of Virat Kohli. However, both players will not be able to recover in time for the 4-Test series.
Team management asks Shreyas Iyer as cover for Rohit Sharma in Test
It is acknowledged that Shreyas Iyer, who is part of the ODI squad, could be asked to stay back as a replacement for Rohit Sharma. Shreyas has been in good form and will be looked like an option by the selectors and the team management.
Rohit and Ishant were injured during the IPL and had been undergoing rehab at NCB in Bangalore. The reports were presented to BCCI and the selectors are not very confident.
The experts of the NCA discussed and then informally conveyed the fitness status of both the players to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, national selectors, and the team management. The details are to be formally conveyed by the officials soon.
BCCI had earlier stated that the progress of both the senior players would be monitored. The officials also added that the players could make it in time for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It is all set to be played from December 17 to January 19.
India head coach Ravi Shastri had stated that Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma must travel to Australia in the next three or four days to be prepared for red-ball cricket. Rohit Sharma had led Mumbai Indians to their 5th IPL title earlier this month.
The absence of Ishant Sharma will be a loss for India as it will disturb the set pace attack. Navdeep Saini could make his Test debut in Adelaide as a replacement. Team India won the 2018-19 series in Australia (2-1).
