Rohit Sharma becomes the first player to hit 200 sixes at home in international cricket

India opening batsman Rohit Sharma scored his 7th century of the format in the second Test of the series against England in Chennai. The Mumbai Indians skipper went on to secure a unique record to his name as he became the first player to hit 200 sixes in international cricket at home. Spinner Jack Leach finally dismissed the opener at an individual score of 161 runs off 231 deliveries. Rohit smashed 18 fours and two sixes in his excellent knock.

Rohit Sharma scored his 7th Test century in the second Test of the series against England in Chennai. Before reaching the hundred run mark, Rohit Sharma slammed two maximums one each of Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali. With this, the 33-year-old took his tally of sixes to 200 in India. The second in the list of most number of sixes in India is former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Dhoni hit 186 sixes followed by Yuvraj Singh who has struck 113 sixes in India.

Rohit Sharma is also the leading Indian batsman in terms of sixes in international cricket. He has smashed 428 sixes and is miles ahead of the next best MS Dhoni with 352 international sixes. Overall, Rohit is only behind Chris Gayle (534) and Shahid Afridi (476) in accordance with international sixes.

It has also been noted that Rohit's century against England in the second Test was his first in any format over a year. The entire 2020, Rohit had struggled to reach the 3-figure mark. The recent ton is also the 4th Test hundred for Rohit Sharma in the ongoing World Test Championship. Australia's star batsman Marnus Labuschagne is currently at the number one position in this record. The right-handed batsman has featured in a total of 13 innings in the tournament for India.

Rohit now has 35 centuries to his name across all the formats as an opening batsman. He is only one ton behind Virender Sehwag in the elite list. Sachin Tendulkar leads the tally with 45 hundred to his name as an opening batsman for the country in all the three formats. Rohit accomplished one more milestone as he became the first player to hit a century in all three formats against four different oppositions. These centuries have come against South Africa, England, West Indies, and Sri Lanka. The classic batsman became the second cricketer after Chris Gayle to smash tons against England in all three formats.
