Aakash Chopra believes that Rohit Sharma has the quality to succeed as a Test opener in England.

For the England tour, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, and KL Rahul are the four specialist openers. Out of the four, KL Rahul is the only player who has played five Tests as an opener in England. The rest have never batted in the top order in English conditions.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra shared full confidence in Rohit Sharma’s capability to succeed in England as an opener. He believes Rohit Sharma would do fine in the English conditions with five of the matches scheduled in the second half of summer in England. Rohit Sharma has the quality and pedigree to succeed and the team should show faith in his capabilities.

Aakash Chopra expects Rohit Sharma to play some important knocks considering he was an opener in the 2019 ODI World Cup. He had the caliber to score five centuries in England during the World Cup. Thereby, it is expected of Rohit Sharma to hit at least 2 or 3 hundred in the upcoming six Test matches.

In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma was the highest run-scorer with 648 runs at an average of 81. His stint in the tournament included five centuries, which is the most ever in a single World Cup.

India should be patient with their openers: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra wants the Indian team to give their openers a bit more time to succeed in England. If the openers are dropped after not performing well in two matches, then no one would do well. So, the players should get time to set themselves and find the right rhythm.

According to Aakash Chopra, Subhuman Gill could also deliver good runs if he is given consistent chance. Rohit Sharma has fewer chances of getting dropped for poor performance. But Shubman Gill would be under some pressure to prove himself. Chopra believes that Gill could do well if given a chance to set himself and get the right balance.

Moreover, the Indian openers would have to find a proper rhythm against the Kiwi and English seam bowling lineup. It would be a big challenge for the team to overcome and succeed.
