The skipper of the Mumbai Indians, four-time IPL trophy winner, Rohit Sharma has created a historical record in IPL. He is now the third batsman with 5000 runs in the IPL tournament. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina have captured the first two spots respectively earlier.
As an honour in his sleeves, Rohit has joined the list of elite batsmen, who have scored more than 5000 runs in the tournament since its advent. In the match against Kings XI Punjab, Sharma was just two runs short of 5000 runs. After Mohammed Shami delivered his first ball to Sharma, he hit a boundary and reached his landmark.
In 192 IPL matches, Rohit has 5002* runs now. He has also played for Deccan Chargers apart from MI for three seasons and scored 1170 runs in 45 matches. The right-handed batsman joined MI in 2011 and has stayed in the team since that time.
Rohit’s journey to score 5000 IPL runs
In the IPL 2013, the franchisee declared Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Under his leadership, MI won their maiden IPL trophy that year. He had smashed 538 runs during the same season, which was one of the reasons for the team’s success. Until now, IPL 2013 is the only season where he has scored more than 500 runs.
Under Rohit’s captaincy, MI has won four IPL titles so far, making him the most successful captain of IPL. Moreover, as an IPL cricketer, he is the part of five IPL-winning teams. In IPL 2009, Deccan Chargers won the IPL title and Sharma was its part.
Rohit is in the third position with 5002* runs of the highest run-scorers’ list. Virat Kohli is in the top place of this list with 5430 runs. Suresh Raina follows Kohli in the list and he has scored 5368 runs in his IPL career so far. As Raina is not playing in this IPL 2020 due to personal reasons, Rohit Sharma can easily grab this opportunity to get to the second position of this list during IPL 2020.
