After the Second test, India’s dynamic opening batsman Rohit Sharma has joined the Test team in Melbourne. He came to Australia earlier this month, but he had to complete his mandatory quarantine period in Sydney.
For the upcoming Sydney Test, Rohit Sharma is most likely to replace either Mayank Agarwal at the top of the order or Hanuma Vihari in the middle order. After India’s victory at Melbourne, stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane was excited about the batsman joining the squad.
Rohit has already missed the first two Tests due to the hamstring injury. He suffered from the injury during the IPL and later moved to Bangalore for rehabilitation. While there is excitement over Rohit Sharma joining the squad, the Mumbai Indians captain will have to perform his best if he gets an opportunity to play in the next two Tests.
Rohit Sharma’s highest score against Australia is 63 not out
Rohit is famous for limited-overs exploits, but the later has a pretty disappointing record in Australia. In five Tests matches, the 33-year-old has only managed 279 runs at a decent average of 31. Surprisingly, his highest Test score in Australia is 63 not out. The right-handed batsman achieved the feat same during the first innings of the Melbourne Test in 2018-19. India had won the match by 137 runs.
During his first tour back in 2014/15, Rohit played three Tests and scored 173 at an average of 28.83. His best score then was 53. In 2018-19, Sharma featured in only two Tests and aggregated 106 runs at an average of 35.33. The limited-overs vice-captain lack of technique was exposed on the last two tours.
Since India last visit to Australia, Rohit Sharma has restarted his Test career, shifting to the top of the order. He tasted immediate success with the scores of 176, 127 and 212 against South Africa. The Mumbai Indians skipper is yet to be tested as an opening batsman away from home. The batsman was to get an opportunity in New Zealand, but because of the injury, he couldn't play.
Not just in Australia but Rohit has a low-Test record overall. His career Test average is 46.54 from 32 matches till date. He has an average of 26.32 in 18 Tests that he has played abroad. Rohit made his Test debut in 2013, but he is yet to play a Test match against Australia at home. All his five games against the Australian team so far have been at home.
