Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni

Former BCCI president Sharad Pawar disclosed how Sachin Tendulkar suggested MS Dhoni's name for India's captainship back in 2007. Back then, India's legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar had the opportunity to lead India again in 2007. However, he passed the baton to the young wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni, and the rest was history. Following the 2007 World Cup exit, Rahul Dravid wanted to give up captaincy and focus only on his batting. The management and the Board of Control for Cricket in India were in a lot of trouble when Tendulkar also refused the role.

However, the batting great made sure he designated a potential captain for the Indian team. When former BCCI president Sharad Pawar addressed Sachin Tendulkar, the batsman had a name in mind. While addressing a public meeting on Sunday, Sharad Pawar disclosed that Tendulkar had proposed MS Dhoni's name for India limited-overs captaincy in 2007.

Dhoni was the captain of India in 200 ODIs and 60 Tests

MS Dhoni accepted India's captaincy for the first time in the 2007 T20 World Cup. India, under the young skipper, went on to win the title. India defeated South Africa and Australia to reach the finals. In an electrifying final match, India defeated Pakistan in a last-over thriller.

There was no looking back for the veteran wicket-keeper batsman from there on as he went on to become one of the most thriving leaders in limited-overs cricket. Under Dhoni's captaincy, India won the 2011 World Cup at home, the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. MS Dhoni also became India's Test captain in 2008 and led the side to the No. 1 spot on ICC Test Rankings.

Dhoni has always been known for his calm and composed nature as he led India to several remarkable victories in the past. The wicket-keeper batsman represented as India's captain in 200 ODIs out of the 350 he played. He also led the Indian cricket team in 60 Tests and 72 T20Is.

Dhoni retired from the purest format of the game as early as 2014. The former India captain hung up his boots from limited-overs captaincy in 2017. He continued playing under Virat Kohli until 2019. The 39-year-old eventually announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020.
